Lessons From a New Wardrobe

Updated: Jun 3, 2024

As you will have seen from a previous post, we moved to our house in Deal, Kent in 2023. Our focus on moving was to get unpacked and tidied away as quick as we could. As time has gone on, we 've started to evaluate what we have where, making changes and improving where needed.

One area that I always found rather under whelming was our wardrobe. With triple sliding doors, it held such promise. But it was all lies! The doors opened to reveal a white ikea set up, with drawers that did not fully open, or fronts that fell off, bare flooring, clinical lighting, holes and marks from previous iterations.... you get the picture (and if you don't - here are some 'before's).

In our previous home, we invested in some bespoke wardrobes, made by a local carpenter. They were priced accordingly. This time, I was not wanting to spend so much. But I still wanted it to be 'nice'.

Via social media, I found out about Stacey at The Home Detox. What appealed to me about Stacey was that as a professional organiser, she would design a space that would suit how we live, not how big the space was and how much could be fit in there. Having taken the time to get to know us, the plans were drawn up and the materials ordered. I described my aim for the space as 'bougie' - pleasantly vague!

The contents of the wardrobe space were all taken out, the space stripped right back, replastered, damp sealed, pressed petal from Dulux on the walls, underlay fit, carpet on top, skirting, units built and improved and refit. Lighting was added.

Even though this was not about decluttering, my goodness was there still a lot cleared out. Taking everything out, giving it a new home, meant that I really reviewed what I needed. Out went worn shoes and bags, on to vinted went clothing ready for a new life.

For me, this whole process reminded me so much about how I like to work with coaching clients. You may come to me thinking this is all about you losing weight - a clear end goal. Actually, once we start to unpack, we realise that there is more to it than that. And at the end, we have got what you wanted and so much more. A lighter, fresher, sparkly, bougie version, more than you ever expected!

And better still, we came in under budget! What could you achieve when you make investments in the right areas?
